Thierry Waziniak

(J.Jacques Avenel, Jacques Di Donato, Barre Philipps, Michaël Attias, Gaël Mevel, John Hébert, Mat Maneri, Franz Hautzinger, Isabelle Duthoit, Gianni Mimmo, Steve Potts, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Michel Doneda, Xavier Charles, Benjamin Duboc, Fumie Hihara, Guillaume Gargaud, Marie Takahashi…).
Thierry Waziniak
As “a poet of the drums in complete mastery of his instrument” (Orynx – Improv & Sounds), Thierry Waziniak enjoys wandering through the worlds of improvised music.
A French drummer and improviser, Waziniak belongs to that rare generation of musicians for whom the drum set ceases to be merely an instrument of pulse and becomes an acoustic territory to explore.
His distinctive approach—based on the control of extremely low dynamics, the relationship between sound and body, and the instant creation of melodic counterpoints—has emerged from a long creative journey alongside remarkable musicians such as Jean-Jacques Avenel, Jacques Di Donato, Barre Phillips, Michaël Attias, Gaël Mével, John Hébert, Mat Maneri, Franz Hautzinger, Isabelle Duthoit, Gianni Mimmo, Steve Potts, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Michel Doneda, Xavier Charles, Benjamin Duboc, Fumie Hihara, Guillaume Gargaud, and Marie Takahashi, among others.
Passionate about cross-disciplinary collaborations, he performs with painter Marc Feld, calligrapher Yukako Matsui, poet Zéno Bianu, and dancers Maki Watanabe and Namiko Gahier-Ogawa.
He has also worked with astrophysicist David Elbaz in the performance “In the Beginning Was Sound.”
As a composer for silent films, Waziniak is also the creator and stage director of Blues Repercussion Sound, a multidisciplinary work combining theater, music, and video.
He conceived and directed “Danse en Latence”, a performance for four dancers and four musicians where audience participation, musical and dance improvisation intertwine in real time.
Waziniak is the artistic director of the label INTRICATION and co-founder of the label RIVES.
A teacher for over thirty years and passionate about the art of transmission, he has developed a unique method of drum instruction directly informed by neuroscience and embodied practice.
He has performed in numerous festivals — including Radio France Montpellier, Strasbourg Jazz Festival, Banlieues Bleues, Mulhouse Festival, Moers Festival, and the Luxembourg Film Festival — and on French national radio programs such as France Musique’s “À l’Improviste”, “Jazz sur le vif”, and in radiophonic creations for France Culture.
His work has been praised by the international press: Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, Jazz Magazine, Jazz Journal, Cadence, Jazzwise, The Wire, among others.
“Thierry Waziniak is without doubt one of the most precise and skilled French drummers and percussionists — not only in striking technique but also in imagination, timing, and a sound richness as masterfully measured as it is spontaneous.”
— Orynx Improv & Sounds
“Thierry Waziniak is astonishing: inventive and attentive, his drumming becomes another voice in the counterpoint, revealing melodies of timbre.”
— Citizen Jazz
“On percussion, Thierry Waziniak is both discreet and watchful, alert to the slightest sonic or rhythmic occurrence.
He multiplies sticks, shapes sound like a craftsman, ends up playing with his bare hands — and works wonders.”
— Gaëtan Le Guern, Ouest France
“We will remember the touch of Thierry Waziniak, who pushes simplicity so far as to feel the drumheads directly with his palms.”
— Jean-Luc Germain, Le Télégramme
Thierry Waziniak is also a geobiologist, specializing in harmonizing living spaces and environments.
